President chakwera derivers a speech.
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has challenged graduates to take lead in providing solutions to the problems which nation prevails. He made remarks on 7th congregation herd at PIL multipurpose hall, Bunda campus on Thursday.
He said Malawi is experiencing many challenges like climate change, locust invasion, protection of environment, food insecurity, providing sustainable agriculture initiatives, combating diseases and among others. Malawians are supposed to be united in addressing problems and making Malawi a better country and graduates must be on forefront in providing answers to the challenges. “I have no doubt that graduates have acquired skills in various discipline of their studies in improving agriculture development transformation and commercialisation and they must be in forefront in providing solutions to the problems that affect the development of the country. ” he said. President Chakwera promised to extend lectures theatre and libraries at bunda and nature resources college from accommodating five thousandstudents to nine thousand and the work expected to take 36 months will commence on first April 2024. According to chakwera this will university to meet its aspiration.In responding to an issue of accommodation problems at the university chakwera made commitment of constructing some hostels through PSIP. ‘Students accommodation is the one of the challenges because there is no adequate investment in previous years.’ the head of state said. ‘The consultants are already at the ground and the vice chancellor should take close inspection to ensure the buildings are modern and environmental friendly’ he continued. President assured Malawians that no students will not complete studies due to lack of school fees because right to education is a constitution issue. Speaking during the congregation president said that he is aware that besides government loans board program there some students who are still struggling to access the grant but his government has put measures to curb the challenge. He added by saying that his government will ensure there is interdependency of university and government and other stakeholder because university can not work in isolation in achieving the development of the nation.
Chakwera added that one pillar of the 2063 vision is focus on agriculture productivity andcommercialisation and Lilongwe university of agriculture and natural resources (LUANAR) should play a major role in fulfilling the vision because is key player in mega farmsprogram. ‘I understand that luanar is knowledge-hood and offers technical support to all involved parties’chakwera said.LUANAR needed to engange in innovations and industralisation the president stated.Chikondano Mussa(the chair of university council)who is also principal secretary to the ministry of education said the university becomes relevant if it engaged in various research. Dr Thomas Munthali(director general of national planning commission), a motivation speaker on the congregation encouraged graduates to have positive mindset and solution oriented.“Malawi requires people who are solution providers and graduates are part of them,the solutions should not benefit an individual but for the entire nation, the country is full of people who are problem dissectors, finger-pointers and faultfinders but graduates must refrain themselves from them.”he said.He continued by saying that graduates should choose their career path and stick to it and always add value to themselves since the world is full of competitions.’I tell you graduates that in life there is no shortcut success and dedicate yourself whenever you have been given an opportunity.He added.’you(graduates) should develop soft skills such as networking, communication, professional and leadership skills because these can be essential in life. He said. Kaunda added by saying that in terms of performance the campus does not matter the performance is the same. He continued saying LUANAR degree or diploma is not a mere paper but a sign of success, pride,output of determination and hard-working. As ways of providing solutions to challenges that Malawi is encountering Lilongwe university of agriculture and natural resources introduced ten new programs including computer science, Bachelor of science in textile and fashion design,Biostatistics, agriculture technologyand many more to make sure agriculture is aligned with forth industrial revolution. According to Kaunda this offered diverse in aligned in majoring talents and equip graduates with knowledge and skills. The university also collaborated with Illovo sugar company in cultivate 103 hectares of maize at dwangwa in nkhotakota to respond to challenges of food insecurity. The agriculture and natural resource university launched mobile app and website for Malawi food database which helped people to access information on foods and make right decision on their diet.This year December aresearch on food resilience system in Malawi on a project called FODOMA will be conducted which will focus on daily improvement, biofertilizers and biopesticides the project worth 1.4 billion kwacha in collaboration with university of lifesciences in Norway funded by Norwegianambassy.On the graduation the vice chancellor said luanar launched policy brief on providing solutions to the problem of El Nino. On dealing with gender- based violence and sexual harassment by established policy framework to address and established awareness campaign such as 16 days of gender activists. The university geared to fight Malawi hunger by utilise all its land through farming and venting into irrigation system.president chakwera said during the congregation that lilongwe university of agriculture and natural resources played an examplary role in mega farm initiatives because it has utilised all its land and wanted to procure additon site within parts of the country. The university offered 20 bags of rice and 20 bags of maize to president Lazarus chakwera as a token of appreciation for initialising the Mega farms projects.last year president chakwera challenged the university to gain its past glory in respond to the voice university cultivated over 300 hectares and is looking forward to increase the area. According to Kaunda luanar vented into irrigation system to ensure abundant yields.
Mashonga Hussein, one of the graduates who was doing bachelor of science in agribusiness management (odel) said that people must be innovative to respond to the challenges that country is currently experiencing like the scarcity of the job opportunities.’Here at university we acquired many skills such as marketing,entrepreneurial,management skills and how to handle difficult issues in life instead of depending on government and other private sector for employment and other aid we can help ourself and the communities through venting into businesses and farming.’mashonga explained. He agreed with vice chancellor professor Emmanuel Watson Kaunda by saying that luanars degree is not a mere paper because he has fully equipped to contribute to the nation. He add by saying that Malawi is a system that means required both input and output and Malawians needed to join hands in order to develop .Fred pointed at the issues of accommodation and fees crisis as some of the obstacles to the performance of the students while one of the anonymous source (a graduate who was doing bachelor of science in agriculture extension) said besides possessed many skills at the institution also complained about poor supervision on students projects ,some lecturers ignoring emails and missing of grades as factors that contribute.In ensuring good performance of students’ vice chancellor organised a party last month for those who scooped GPA greater than 3.6 and university collaborated with local and international stakeholders like Kinneret university in Israel to gave room to students conduct their practicals.proffessor kaunda said last year university sent 200 students and this year 100 have gone for 10 months of practicals.

According to professor Kaunda 2162 graduated, 580 were awarded with diplomas, 1500 bachelor degrees, 75 masters degrees and 7 PHDs. 33% of graduates were females which was an improvement from 15% in the past years. According to Mayesero Chikhadzula, Malawi broadcasting cooperation journalist said Bunda college was established in 1961 to stimulated the agricultural activities since Malawi depended on agrarian in term of the economy andonly 15 were enrolled as first students in 1965.in 1967 the college was taken as one of the university of Malawi. On July 11 ,2011 president Bingu wa Muthalika approved that LUANAR should stand on its own.Over 10000 students graduated since the delinking from the university of Malawi. LUANAR has three campuses bunda , natural resources college, city campus including odel and 5 faculties these are faculty of agriculture which emerged the star of the day as all four students who got distinctions belong to it, two form agriculture engineering, the other two form biotechnology and horticulture respectively. Other faculties including developmental studies, natural resource human ecology and veterinary medicine where one got credit or distinction but only passes. According to professor Kaunda the university currently have 214 staff members amongst them 111 have PHDs called doctors, 13 professors ,25 associate professors and 48 are senior lecturers.The congregation started on thuesday and finished friday and some who attended were vice president dr saulos chilima, rayzine mzikamanda (chief justice) minister of education madaliso chiwirima and many more there were over 5000 people at the congregation.
